ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION TO LAUNCH THE JOURNAL OF HUMANITARIAN AFFAIRS SPECIAL ISSUE

On 3 February, Dr Bianca Fadel shared experiences from the RYVU Project as part of the roundtable discussion organised by the ‘Southern Responses to Displacement’ research team to launch its Special Issue of the Journal of Humanitarian Affairs.

This online event was facilitated by Prof Elena Fiddian-Qasmiyeh, Principal Investigator of the ‘Southern Responses to Displacement’ (SRD) research project. The project uses a multi-perspectival approach centred on the participatory co-production of knowledge to explore why, how, and with what effect Southern states, civil society networks, and refugees have responded to support Syrian refugees. As part of this project, Prof Fiddian-Qasmiyeh alongside Dr Estella Carpi have co-edited an insightful Special Issue in the Journal of Humanitarian Affairs, which brings together multiple perspectives on Southern responses to displacement in different contexts.

The roundtable on 3 February served as the launch event for this Special Issue, providing an opportunity for its co-authors to reflect collectively on the broader topic of Southern responses to displacement within a global context. The discussion, which took a conversational format, explored critical questions relating to the project’s broader research agenda from the perspective of several of the Special Issue's co-authors, including Professor Elena Fiddian-Qasmiyeh and Dr Estella Carpi from University College London, Dr Rawan Arar from the University of Washington, and Dr Şule Can from Binghamton University.

Dr Bianca Fadel, from Northumbria University, participated in the roundtable on behalf of the RYVU team of co-authors of the Special Issue paper “Refugee Volunteering and Responses to Displacement in Uganda: Navigating Service-Delivery, Work and Precarity“. During the event, Dr Fadel shared experiences from the RYVU research on the ways refugee groups themselves are responding to humanitarian crises and development issues in Uganda.
